Improvisation as a practice, not a performance style.
Our improv classes and workshops and retreats near Atlanta focus not primarily on comedy, speed, or cleverness. Instead, we explore how improvisation can sharpen listening, clarify character, and deepen responsiveness to others and to the moment.
Improvisation is treated as a way of studying human behavior — how we act, react, relate, and reveal ourselves through small choices.
Not everything called "improv" is the same. Here's what shapes our approach:
It does not require participants to be funny, loud, or fast.
People completely new who want a thoughtful entry point, not a sink-or-swim trial by fire.
Improvisers coming back after burnout, a break, or disillusionment with other approaches.
Those interested in nuance, restraint, and character depth rather than speed or comedy.
Creatives exploring embodiment, behavior, and what it means to inhabit a character.
People interested in communication, adaptability, and presence in their work lives.
Classes are structured to reduce overwhelm and support focus.
When playing a human, the number of possible traits, motivations, and choices can feel overwhelming. Where do you start? What do you commit to?
Play objects instead of people. When playing an object, it becomes easier to strip away excess and focus on one dominant quality — function, constraint, desire, or resistance.
Beginners who feel lost when "creating a character" · Improvisers whose characters feel generalized or vague · Writers interested in embodiment and behavior
Playing Objects is one offering within the Improv Studio, not its foundation. The studio hosts a wide range of teachers and approaches.
The Improv Studio is designed to host excellent teachers from diverse lineages, both in person and online.
Some teachers may offer short workshops; others may teach multi-week classes or intensives. Virtual offerings are welcomed alongside in-person work.
The studio's identity is shaped by quality of teaching, not a single method.
